February Book of the Month
February’s book of the month is all about the dream holiday:
This book represents a very small but vital portion of the books we send: Vocational books on hospitality and tourism from Pearson, purchased with funds generously donated by the Beit Trust.
In many of Book Aid International’s countries of operation, the tourism and hospitality sector plays an important role in contributing to the national economy. As such it is a popular choice of career for school leavers, as well as for people who may have missed out on a formal education for various reasons, such as rural poverty, conflict, teenage pregnancy or a prison sentence.
Our library partners are always in need of vocational books to meet this demand, but donations have become increasingly difficult to source in recent years.
So we are very grateful to the Beit Trust who, as well as funding our provision of donated books to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, also provide funds for us to purchase books that are otherwise difficult to obtain. In 2016 we used some of this grant to buy vocational books from Pearson at a substantial [60%] discount on the published price. Thanks to this generous support, we are now able to donate 475 vocational and reference books to libraries in southern Africa that really need them.
