Inspiring Readers wins London Book Fair International Excellence Award
We are delighted to announce that Inspiring Readers has won the prestigious 2017 London Book Fair International Excellence in the category of Educational Initiatives Award.
The awards, which are held in partnership with the UK Publishers Association (PA) and sponsored by Hytex, celebrate excellence in 16 categories, including international publishing, academic and scholarly publishing, children’s publishing, literary translation and digital innovation. In each award category, the judging panel was comprised of experts in that sector.
The awards were presented last night, 14 March, in an evening event attended by leaders from across the Book Trade. London Book Fair Director Jacks Thomas said:
The International Excellence Awards are a unique celebration of the achievements of all those across the world bringing books to a wider audience, whether through publishing, retail or other literary initiatives.
Our competition included leading publishers from China and Canada, so as a small charity we were delighted to win! As Inspiring Readers would not be possible without the generous donations of books we receive from the Book Trade, it was wonderful to receive the award at an evening attended by many leaders of the publishing industry.
Stephen Lotinga, Chief Executive, The UK Publishers Association also had much to say in praise of the awards:
This year’s winners of the International Excellence Awards demonstrate the thriving, innovative global publishing industry we are all proud to be part of. The PA is delighted to work with The London Book Fair to celebrate both the industry’s success at home, and the success of our international colleagues.
Thanks to the support and funding we have received so far for Inspiring Readers over 80,000 children in Kenya, Malawi and Cameroon are already enjoying the books so generously donated by the UK publishing industry. The Educational Initiatives award will give the programme international recognition and we hope bring new supporters on board.
Our Director, Alison Tweed, shared a few words about what the Award means to our team and the people we serve:
We cannot thank the judging panel and the entire London Book Fair team enough for selecting us for this prestigious award.
We would also like to thank players of People’s Postcode Lottery for funding Inspiring Readers in Kenya and Malawi. Players funded the programme’s launch, without which it never could have won this outstanding prize.
Be a part of our award winning flagship programme
We have big plans to expand Inspiring Readers over the next three years and are seeking funds to expand the programme into Uganda and beyond. It costs just £250 to purchase 100 locally published books, £1,500 to supply over 1,000 books to a school and £2,600 to fund Inspiring Readers in a single school.
