Making big changes through books!
When Little Book for Big Changes authors Karen Ng and Kirsten Liepmann launched a crowdfunding campaign to publish their book, they were astounded by the support they received. To show their gratitude, they donated 100 copies of their book to two charities, one of which was us!
Here Karen and Kirsten tell us more about their book and their support for readers across the world.
What is Little Book for Big Changes about?
Little Book for Big Changes is an activity book filled with puzzles, crafts, experiments and tips for children to learn about and engage with global challenges such as poverty and climate change. It offers fun, educational and creative ways to bring people together to help change the world.
What inspired you to write Little Book for Big Changes?
We met when we were both studying for an MBA at the University of Oxford and we quickly bonded over a shared passion for social impact. After we left Oxford, we realised that many people are not aware of critical challenges facing our world or feel removed from them. We knew that great potential lies within children, and in order to help prepare them to navigate these global challenges, we wanted to write a book that would inform, empower, and help instill a sense of responsibility early on. We believe books have the power to inspire new ideas and change our world for the better.

Why did you choose to support Book Aid International?
We started a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to help us make this book a reality. We were fortunate to receive the support of over 400 backers from 30 countries, who collectively pre-ordered more than 700 copies! It doubled the amount we expected to raise. As a way to express our gratitude, we decided to donate a total of 100 books to two charitable organisations and asked our backers to select from five options.
We included Book Aid International because it is an international organisation that not only recognises the importance and power of books, but it also strives to build a positive culture and habits around reading. Our backers must have appreciated Book Aid International’s work too because they voted for the charity to receive 50 books!
What impact do you hope that Little Book for Big Changes will have for the library users we send it to?
We would love to see how library users, both children and adults, use this book to understand and improve the world around them. We want them to understand that no matter how small their actions may seem, they have the power to make positive changes!

How does it feel to know that your support is helping people around the world who would otherwise not have books read?
We are honoured to support Book Aid International’s work to provide books to under-served communities. Your work resonates so much with the messages we are trying to deliver with our book – such as the importance of fair education for all, responsibility of global citizens and children’s potential to make the world a better place.
We can’t wait to hear where our books end up and what library users think about Little Book for Big Changes!
