20,000 readers inspired thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery

MEDIA RELEASE – 20,000 children inspired to read

7th November 2016 | News

Book Aid International today announced the launch of its new flagship school library programme, Inspiring Readers, in 25 schools in Kenya thanks to funds from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The books being donated to these schools will reach around 20,000 children and give them new opportunities to learn to read, succeed in school and reach their full potential.

Inspiring Readers brings reading into African classrooms by providing Box Libraries full of 1,250 brand new books to schools, training teachers in how best to use the books and ensuring that each school has the on-going support of a professional librarian.

Over the next four years, Book Aid International aims to expand Inspiring Readers and bring the joy of reading to 250,000 children in 310 schools across sub-Saharan Africa. The charity’s director, Alison Tweed, explained the programme saying:

“The reality is that many children in Africa have very little chance of having books of their own to read and very little access to books at school. These children will find it much more difficult to learn to read and, as a result, they’re less likely to reach their full potential. Inspiring Readers aims to put brand new books into these children’s hands. The programme is off to a great start because of the funds we’ve received from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery. I would like to thank every player for helping to make Inspiring Readers possible.”

Agnes is one of the librarians involved in the launch of Inspiring Readers. As the Head Librarian of Rumuruti branch library in Laikipia County, Kenya, she plays a vital role in supporting local schools which are receiving books. She explained the difference that Inspiring Readers will make:

“The main problem in the community is poverty and the community is mostly nomads. Illiteracy levels are very high. Inspiring Readers is going to be transformational because there are some areas where they have never seen a book. These children are very clever. They were saying that the books make them feel like they have gone out into the world, even though they are still in their village. So, the Inspiring Readers programme – this is the best thing to have happened Laikipia county.” Read Agnes’ story.

Book Aid International recently received £200,000 from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. In addition to funding the launch of Inspiring Readers, these funds have also enabled Book Aid International to set up five new Children’s Corners in public libraries in Zimbabwe and continue its work supporting 2,624 libraries in 12 African countries by donating brand new books. Last year alone the charity shipped over 1.1 million books.

Book Aid International has been supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery since 2014 and funding has already helped the charity to establish six Children’s Corners in Malawi public libraries and launch a digital project to bring e-readers into children’s libraries in Uganda.
