£425,000 raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery

18th March 2021 | News

We are delighted to announce that we have received an award of £425,000 thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery to support our work in 2021. This will allow us to reach out to more people across Africa, offering the chance to read to those who face barriers to accessing books.

The funding raised by players will help us respond to the devastating effect the pandemic has had on education. Over 1.5bn pupils were out of school at the height of the crisis, often with few or no books to support their learning. We will provide 50,000 carefully selected children’s books to support and complement the work of a range of NGOs delivering education projects across sub-Saharan Africa, creating a lasting resource for schools.

We will also use the funding for our new Books to Go project. Books to Go will create school-based lending libraries in 20 schools across four countries staffed with specially trained teachers to ensure that in the event of future school closures children can continue to access books to read and learn.

In addition, the support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery will enable us to provide additional books to refugees, grow our work providing life-saving medical books across Africa and expand the Reading Around the Reserve programme, offering 41,000 children in 52 primary schools in the area around Bangweulu Wetlands in Zambia books in their classrooms.

Our Chief Executive, Alison Tweed, thanked players for their support: “The funds we’ve received thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery will allow us to reach those who face the greatest barriers to reading and learning and to create new opportunities for reading to flourish. They will also help us find new ways of providing books as the pandemic continues to affect communities around the world, and we would like to extend a very special thanks for standing by our charity during these challenging times.”

Since 2014, players of People’s Postcode Lottery have provided £2,725,000 to help us reach more people across Africa who need books. In previous years, players have funded the London Book Fair International Excellence Award Winning Inspiring Readers programme and helped us begin providing books to communities in West Africa and the Horn of Africa.
