Kamuzu College of Nursing

Supporting medical staff and students in Malawi

Each year we provide thousands of brand new books to medical libraries in hospitals and training colleges. Access to accurate, reliable information is crucial for the provision of good medical care and education but in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, hospitals and medical schools lack the funds for online or print resources. As a result, many medical staff and students have to rely on books that are more than 10 years out of date. We aim to change this by providing books for better health.

One of the colleges we send books to is the Kamuzu College of Nursing in Malawi. We recently heard from Dr Tendai Mussa, a Senior Medical Officer who uses the college library to support his work. We were delighted to hear of the difference the books we send are making.

Dr Tendai Mussa

I am a Senior Medical Officer working under the Ministry of Health in Malawi. I am currently stationed at Chikwawa District Hospital which is about 406 kilometres from the capital, Lilongwe. I would like to appreciate your generosity towards the Kamuzu College Nursing Library. I have greatly benefited from utilising some of the books you have donated.

It was very difficult for me to find an academic resource centre for studying during my internship in Lilongwe. When I found out about the library, I was very impressed with their book collection since it included up to date core medical text books (e.g. Kumar and Clark’s Clinical medicine 8th edition) and a wide range of other medical books. I immediately obtained membership. As mentioned earlier, I am now very far from the library but I can still access their catalogue online, borrow books and renew them online.

I sincerely thank you for your generous efforts. The knowledge I am acquiring through your donations will make me a better medical doctor for the people of Malawi.

Dr Mussa’s experience is not unusual and many medical practitioners struggle to access the information they need. You can help us supply more books to medical libraries by donating to support our work. We would also welcome donations of brand new books from medical publishers.
