A back of the net donation for football fans

Football-mad readers at libraries across Africa will soon be honing their football skills in their local libraries as well as on the pitch, thanks to a recent donation of sports books from deCoubertin Books. We caught up with deCoubertin Books to find out more about their donation:deCoubertin logoHere at deCoubertin Books we believe that working with good causes is something that should be inherent in every business, no matter what its size. In the past we have worked with many charities close to our authors’ hearts, including Everton in the Community, the Everton Former Players Foundation and Stick N’ Step.

On this occasion we are working with Book Aid International by donating brand new books to support their partner libraries in sub-Saharan Africa. The charity believes everyone should have the chance to read in order to shape their own futures and it’s a message we couldn’t agree more with.

World Cup book

Football is by far the most popular sport on the planet and the passion for the game burns more brightly in Africa than perhaps on any other continent. In 2014, a report showed that in Nigeria – Africa’s largest economy – an incredible 83% of the nation are interested in the game, a higher percentage than any other nation in the world[1]!

In turn, Africa have produced some of the best players in the modern game, from George Weah (Liberia) to Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast) to Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon). African countries have also provided us with some of the great World Cup moments: think Roger Milla’s dance at Italia ’90 for Cameroon, Senegal’s shock win over France in 2002 and the whole tournament in South Africa in 2010.

England Expects book

That passion and talent will undoubtedly continue to flourish in years to come and we hope that one of the many ways a child will be introduced to the game is through the written word. Book Aid International will therefore be sending copies of The World Cup: The Complete History and England Expects: A History of the England Football Team to African libraries for football enthusiasts to enjoy.  A footballing education can come in many different forms.

Huge thanks to deCoubertin Books for this fantastic donation. Books on sport are always popular with our partners and these titles will soon be on their way to all our partners for the community and public libraries they support. We hope that these books will cultivate not only a love of football but a life-long love of reading as well.
