Without libraries, whole communities suffer
Millions of people worldwide live so far from their nearest library that visiting it is never an option.
But, without books, whole communities suffer. Education falters. Opportunities are lost. Children and adults miss out on the chance to live out their full potential.
We are determined to bring more books to the communities worldwide that will benefit from them the most – and our Community Container Libraries are a vital way to do just that.
The power of Community Container Libraries
It all starts with a shipping container.
Working with a local partner, we source and install a shipping container in a community where few people have the chance to read.
We then fit it out with everything from shelving to windows, and fill the shelves with more than 5,000 brand new books. We also provide funding to buy books locally, and train staff and volunteers to encourage reading and spread the word about the power of books.
When everything is in place, we provide funds so our partners can run a launch event for the community – and from that point on, the possibilities are endless.
Children can discover books they remember forever. Students can prepare for their exams. Adults can learn how to build businesses. Thousands of people can start imagining a more hopeful future.

Before and after
76,000 people live in Dunga, Zanzibar, and before their Community Container Library opened, they had no library at all. Today, an empty field has been transformed into a thriving library.
